During the stay of the patient in the hyperbaric chamber, the breathing of pure medical oxygen, which slowly dissolves in the blood plasma. As the rising pressure in the chamber, so also rises the amount of dissolved oxygen in blood plasma.
That is the difference between the breathing at normal pressure and increased pressure. The oxygen dissolved in the blood plasma gets up to fluid in the intercellular spaces. In this way, it may directly enter into the cells in the body that normally suffer from a lack of oxygen. The function of these cells is gradually restored.
Physiological basis of hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an increase the fraction of dissolved oxygen plasma.
When breathing air at normal pressure of 101 kPa, hemoglobin is saturated up to 97%. The saturation of hemoglobin is growing with increasing partial pressure of oxygen according to the characteristic curves of dissociation. In contrast, the proportion of the physically dissolve oxygen in the plasma is growing depending on the partial of oxygen is linear in the amount of 0,003 ml/ torr/ 100 ml of blood. This is the coefficient of solubility of oxygen in plasma. 100% saturation of hemoglobin is reached at a PaO2 of about 20 kPa. Any further increase of the pressure of oxygen has no influence on the saturation of hemoglobin.
On the other hand,in increasing the pressure of the oxygen it increases the amount of oxygen physically dissolved in the plasma. At a pressure of 202 kPa in a hyperbaric chamber are the physical dissolved already 4 volume percent oxygen. At a pressure of 303 kPa this is of 6.6 volume percent and the fabric is fed from the amount of oxygen , which corresponds to the arterial-venous the difference. It is therefore theoretically possible to oxygenation tissues was conducted without the presence of hemoglobin.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can take every patient regardless of age. We treat newborns whose mothers breastfeeding in the chamber and our oldest patient was 91 years old.
On the basis of the request and consent of the doctor's health insurance, the patient may undergo treatment. Each insurance company has determined disease that treatment in an oxygen chamber reimbursed.
